Sweden Yachts 45

The Sweden Yachts 45 is a 46-foot performance cruiser designed by Peter Norlin and Jens Östmann, first produced in 2000 by the Swedish yard Sweden Yachts. It was recognised as Sailboat of the Year 2000 by SAIL magazine, acknowledging its blend of offshore capability and Scandinavian build quality. CE certified to Category A for ocean passages, the 45 carries a displacement of 12,400 kg with a 42 percent ballast ratio that contributes to its stability in demanding conditions.

The hull is a fine-entry design with a fin keel — available with a bulb option — and a separate spade rudder. The fractional sloop rig uses a self-tacking jib as standard, which reduces crew workload on tacks while a genoa is available for more reaching power. Theoretical hull speed is approximately 8.4 knots, and the design performs creditably in both racing and bluewater cruising contexts.

The Sweden Yachts 45 is built with a fibreglass sandwich hull, a construction method that improves insulation and reduces interior condensation — a practical consideration for high-latitude sailing. The deck and hull are joined with care typical of Scandinavian production yards, and the teak deck is a standard feature. Keel options include a standard fin keel and a wing-keel variant, both cast in lead.

Interior woodwork is finished in mahogany that is oil-varnished five times before being assembled into modules, reflecting a traditional Scandinavian cabinet-making approach. Alternative interior timbers such as teak or cherrywood were available to order. The result is a warm, handcrafted feel that sets the boat apart from most contemporaneous production cruisers.

With a sail area of 105 m² and a displacement-to-length ratio in the moderate range, the Sweden Yachts 45 is a genuinely capable performer. The fractional rig with a fully-battened mainsail and self-tacking jib makes the boat manageable short-handed, while the clean, well-organised cockpit is ergonomically designed for offshore passages. Electric winches handle the overlapping genoa, further reducing physical effort.

The separate spade rudder and fine bow entry give the boat a responsive, direct feel in variable sea conditions. Owners and brokers consistently describe the helm as light and well-balanced, making the 45 a confident offshore vessel rather than merely a coastal day-sailer.

The standard interior layout offers three double cabins — a forward owner's cabin, a port aft cabin, and a starboard aft cabin — served by two heads with separate shower compartments, sleeping six in total. The saloon is spacious for a 46-foot boat, featuring a U-shaped dinette and a forward-facing chart table well suited to navigation at sea. Alternative layouts including a four-cabin or two-cabin arrangement were available from the builder.

The galley is finished to a high standard, with dual refrigeration, an induction hob, and a gimballed oven in some builds. Stowage is generous throughout, including three large lazarette lockers aft. The mahogany cabinetry, leather upholstery options, and quality of fit and finish place the 45 firmly in the premium segment of production cruising yachts.
