Lagoon 450

The Lagoon 450 is a French-built cruising catamaran that became the best-selling catamaran of its era, with more than 850 hulls completed across two variants: the 450F (Flybridge) and the 450S (Sporttop). Production ran from 2010 through 2021, with the flybridge model discontinued in 2019. The boat was designed by VPLP Design (Van Peteghem/Lauriot-Prevost) with interior work by the Italian studio Nauta Design — the first Lagoon model to feature their involvement — and exterior styling by Patrick le Quément.

Aimed squarely at bluewater family cruising and the charter market, the 450 struck a widely appreciated balance between generous living space and manageable single- or shorthanded operation. More than 120 Lagoons have completed Atlantic crossings with the ARC rally in recent years, with Lagoon accounting for three times more finishers than any competing brand.

The hulls are built using vacuum-infused fiberglass sandwich construction, a technique that optimizes the resin-to-laminate ratio and reduces overall weight compared to conventional hand-layup methods. Structural integrity is reinforced through solid laminate sections at high-load points: the rudder tubes are laminated directly into the hull, chainplates are mounted on heavy solid laminate pads, and the mast bears down onto a full-beam structural bulkhead. Deck hardware receives substantial backing plates throughout.

Rather than daggerboards, the Lagoon 450 uses fixed stub keels, which limits pointing ability to some degree but eliminates complexity, reduces maintenance, and keeps the working draft to a shallow 4'4" — practical for exploring anchorages in thin water. The rig is a fractional sloop with a deck-stepped aluminum mast, twin swept diamond spreaders, and 1×19 stainless wire standing rigging.

The Lagoon 450 is not a performance racing cat, but owners consistently report being pleasantly surprised by its sailing ability. With nearly 1,400 square feet of upwind sail area and a large square-headed mainsail, the boat moves efficiently in moderate to fresh conditions. Daily offshore runs of 200 nautical miles or more are achievable, and the boat handles a range of sea states with composure.

The 450S variant introduced a helm station integrated into the deckhouse structure at approximately mid-ships on the starboard side, along with a boom positioned 28 inches lower than on the flybridge version. This lowers the center of gravity, reduces rotational inertia in the rig, and gives the sport-top boat a slightly more dynamic feel under sail. Two 45 HP diesel inboards provide dependable motoring performance in calms or when entering and leaving port.

The 450 is available in several interior configurations offering between six and twelve berths, typically spread across four or six cabins split between the two hulls. The wide 25'10" beam translates into a very spacious main saloon that blurs the boundary between the interior and the large aft cockpit through a wide sliding door. Nauta Design's involvement brought a contemporary, light aesthetic with clean lines and quality finishes.

Exterior living space is equally generous, with a forward deck area, the large aft cockpit, and — on the 450F — a dedicated flybridge for helming and socializing above the main deck. The combination of multiple deck zones, an open saloon, and well-appointed cabins makes the boat well suited to extended passage-making with family or groups.
