Overview

The Futuna Explorer 54 is an aluminum expedition cruising yacht designed by the French naval architecture office of Bernard Nivelt (Joubert/Nivelt), with interior styling by Pierre Frutschi. Built by Futuna Yachts in Bruz, France, the design was introduced around 2013 and targets serious offshore and high-latitude voyaging — including expedition charter, adventure sailing, and liveaboard use.

The boat's cutter rig, with a genoa and staysail on roller furlers and a cruising asymmetrical carried on a short bowsprit, provides a manageable, versatile sail plan suited to shorthanded crews on long passages. Naval architect Robert Perry has praised Nivelt as a highly skilled designer and described the Explorer 54 as a purpose-built offshore yacht rather than a compromise aimed at a broad market.

Design and Construction

The hull is built entirely in marine-grade aluminum, assembled from CNC-cut panels for high structural precision and strength. This all-metal construction gives the Explorer 54 exceptional durability for high-latitude and remote-destination sailing where the risk of ice and grounding is real. The hull form features short ends, a broad stern, and generous freeboard consistent with modern offshore practice.

A key feature is the NACA-profile swinging centerboard, operated hydraulically, which allows the boat to reduce draft to as little as 1.25 m (4' 1") when the board is raised — enabling exploration of shallow anchorages, estuaries, and remote beaches that would be inaccessible to most cruising yachts of this size. When fully deployed, the board extends to approximately 3.55 m (11' 7") to deliver upwind performance on open-ocean passages. Twin rudders complete the underbody.

Under Sail

The Explorer 54 carries a cutter rig with overlapping genoa and staysail on roller furlers, supplemented by a cruising asymmetric spinnaker on a bowsprit furler. This arrangement gives crews a wide range of sail combinations to match varied wind and sea conditions without complex handling. The displacement-to-length ratio of 173 and a sail area-to-displacement ratio of around 20.5 indicate a moderate, balanced cruiser that prioritizes seakeeping and load-carrying ability over raw light-air speed.

The hull's theoretical maximum speed is approximately 9.4 knots, and the moderate D/L places the design solidly in offshore cruiser territory. The centerboard adds meaningful upwind efficiency for a boat that can otherwise enter ports and anchorages drawing just over four feet.

Accommodation

Below decks, the Explorer 54 offers three cabins and six berths, arranged with an owner's cabin forward and two guest cabins aft. A notable feature is the dual-saloon layout: a pilothouse-style upper saloon adjacent to the navigation station provides 360-degree views from the watch station and galley, while a second, more intimate saloon is positioned lower in the hull for sheltered socializing at sea.

Fresh water capacity is 1,000 liters (264 US gallons), reflecting the long-range intent of the design. The interior emphasizes stowage and practical offshore ergonomics, and the large forepeak is configured as a proper sail and gear locker suited to extended voyaging away from provisioning ports.
