Discovery Revelation 480

The Discovery Revelation 480 is the inaugural model in Discovery Yachts' Revelation line, making its world debut at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2020. It is derived from the Southerly 480 hull — both share the same underwater form and general dimensions — but was developed as a distinct product aimed at bluewater cruisers who prefer a traditional fixed keel and a lower, sleeker deck profile rather than the Southerly's raised saloon and lifting swing keel arrangement.

Measuring 48 feet 7 inches overall with a beam of 14 feet 6 inches, the Revelation 480 is a substantial offshore cruiser. Two keel options were offered: a shoal-draft fin at 1.8 m (5'11") and a deeper standard fin at 2.2 m (7'3"). The yacht carries a CE Category A ocean rating and is powered by a Yanmar 80 hp diesel, giving it strong self-sufficiency for long passages.

The Revelation 480 was designed by Stephen Jones Yacht Design, a UK studio with extensive experience in performance cruising yachts. The hull is built in fiberglass-reinforced composite, following the same tooling used for the Southerly 480. The deck and superstructure were redesigned to eliminate the raised-saloon coachroof found on the Southerly, producing a lower and more contemporary roofline. Twenty hull ports are distributed along the topsides, and a broad glazed area wraps around the deck saloon to flood the interior with natural light even with the lowered profile.

The rig is a fractional sloop with an in-mast furling mainsail and a furling genoa, giving a total upwind sail area of approximately 1,399 sq ft (130 m²). The arrangement prioritizes ease of single- or short-handed sailing, with the bulk of sail handling managed from the cockpit.

Because the Revelation 480 uses a fixed fin keel rather than the Southerly's swing keel, it offers more predictable handling and a stiffer, more reassuring feel in a seaway. The standard 2.2 m keel provides a meaningful righting-moment advantage over the shoal option, while the shoal keel at 1.8 m allows access to shallower anchorages. The displacement of around 17,250 kg means the yacht is firmly in the cruising-displacement category, built for comfort and range rather than racing performance. The in-mast furling mainsail and self-tacking jib arrangement allow easy sail reduction without crew going forward, an important attribute on extended offshore passages.

The Revelation 480 offers a single-level interior layout that benefits greatly from the lowered coachroof — the absence of the stepped saloon of the Southerly version allows the accommodation to feel open and uninterrupted fore-to-aft. The saloon is bright and airy, with natural light entering through the hull ports and the wide saloon windows. Hull number one at the Boot Dusseldorf launch was fitted out in a contemporary style featuring stainless steel inlays, LED lighting throughout, and a fully electric galley with an induction hob.

Tankage is generous for bluewater work: 591 liters (156 US gallons) of water and 402 liters (106 US gallons) of fuel. Three guest cabins are provided, making the boat suitable for extended liveaboard voyaging or charter use. The finish quality and appointments on the launch hull reflected Discovery Yachts' reputation for high-quality British craftsmanship.
